PRESENT : M . Adams, L. Cahill, CJ Cullinan, J. Grazulis (arrived late), C. McGovern, K. Pilgrim, C. Ransick , B. Williams , Council Member, Ray Tomasso and School Board member, Mary Dounay. REGRETS: Y. Russell (excused). ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. 04 -15 Motion: That the minutes of the September 14, 2004 meeting be accepted as written. Moved by: Mark Adams Seconded by: Lorraine Cahill The Motion passed . The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wed., October 27 at 7 p.m. The Friends ' Book Group, Booker's Dozen will meet on Tuesday, October 26 at 7 p.m . The Fr iends have a travel program on Thursday, October 28. Bill and Jennifer Clayton will talk about their 43-day trip on the Si lk Road. It was noted under the monthly statistics that the use of the Internet was down. Mr. Long said he felt this was due to the continued problems with the printer capability from the Internet. The number of visitors was also lower than the previous year. Mr. Long again thanked the Board for their generous offer of money to attend the upcoming CAL conference . No staff members have requested the use of the funds provided . City Council has given approval for the Library to close the first week in August for "housekeeping" purposes , beginning in 2005. It is ant icipated that the chore of weeding will be much less than this past summer , leaving more t ime for staff training and planning and building maintenance work. It is hoped that the transit ion to a new vendor for Internet access will be undertaken by the end of the year . The Smart Cards should have more capability and programs can be set up so t he closing time is displayed on the screen prior to the computer shutt ing down at the end of the day. Ms . Pi lgrim presented Mr. Rans ick with a certificate honoring him as "Author in Residence" of the Englewood Pub li c Library. This is in recognit ion of the upcoming release of Mr. Rans ick's second book, "Return to Emptiness". A book release event will take place at the Library on Sunday , Nov. 14 from 2 - 4. -1 - Chris will be reading from his new book, as well as selling and signing copies of the book. Ms . Pilgrim thanked Ms. McGovern for the evening treats. Mr. Long reported that in response to his letter of request for videos from Blockbuster Video and Hollywood Video, the library received coupons for free video rentals from Hollywood Video. These will be used for reading incentives or prizes for programs . The 2005 Budget process is now complete. Thanks to City Council the library will not be closing on Sundays, will not be cutting staff and will keep the book budget at the 2004 level. Other departments did take substantial budget cuts. In the City's Capital Budget, money has been set aside to replace the carpet in the Library over the next 2 years. Recently an Englewood resident made a donation of a CCTV to the library. The system had been purchased for the resident's parents who had both died suddenly. The system would cost approximately $3 ,400 to p urchase. The idea of a staff appreciation lunch in November was discussed. It was decided that Wed., Nov. 17th from 11 :30 - 1 :30 would be a good time and day. Ms. Cullinan and Mr. Ransick will be the committee in charge. Ms. Grazulis said she had seen Jason Fish at the Englewood High School homecoming. He is enjoying Colorado School of Mines. Member's Choice Ms. Cullinan said that the construction I remodel at her house continues. Ms. Grazulis said life continues to be busy. Ms. Dounay said her life is revolving around the election, voter registration, et al. She thanked Mr. Ransick for his letter of support in the Englewood Herald Letter last week. Ms. Cahill mentioned that her daughter, Mandy was recently named Rocky Mountain News student of the week. Ms. McGovern was recently in Portland, OR for her sister's birthday. Ms. Williams said she would be "playing" in Boston next weekend with her daughter. Her grandson, Derek has applied to go to school in England in January. Mr. Ransick had post cards advertising READ Colorado on Nov. 6 at Invesco Field, which he passed out to all present. He mentioned that there is a possibility that in May of 2005 he might be doing a literary tour of England, with someone else doing the organizing. Stay tuned for more information! Ms. Pilgrim is going to San Diego to visit her son and to tour colleges with her daughter. Mr. Adams related a story about an elevator episode . He will be visiting his brother in Sweden in January. He mentioned that Reggie Rivers , who visited the Library in Aug ., has a movie deal for his recent book . Mr. Tomasso said not much is going on right now. He was asked about the first summer of operation at Pirate 's Cove . It went very well. There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8 p.m . -2 - • • •
