Englewood Public Library Board
November 9, 2004
Chairperson, Karen Pilgrim at 7:02 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: M. Adams, CJ Cullinan (arrived late), J. Grazulis (arrived late), C. McGovern, K. Pilgrim, C.
Ransick, B. Williams, Council Member, Ray Tomasso and School Board member, Mary Dounay.
REGRETS: L. Cahill, Y. Russell (excused).
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
04 -16 Motion: That the minutes of the October 12, 2004 meeting be accepted as written.

The Motion passed.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the Friends of the Library is Wed., November 17 at 7 p.m.
The Friends ' Book Group, Booker's Dozen will meet on Tuesday, November 30 at 7 p.m.
The Friends will be having a Holiday Bake sale on December 4 as part of the Englewood Shines festivities
from 2 - 5 p.m.
In discussing the monthly statistics it was noted that the drop in Internet use could be due to the lack of
printer capability. Hopefully this will be rectified with a new vendor by the end of the year.
There was discussion about the amount of money left in the Library Board budget for 2004.
04 -17 Motion: That $1500 of the remaining Library Board budget be designated for use by the Library
to replace items weeded from the collection due to poor condition.

Mr. Long mentioned that Hollywood Video had given coupons for free video rentals that were used by the
CELTS group as prizes at their recent Halloween Party.
On Sunday , November 14 , from 2 -4 p.m. Mr. Ransick will be reading from his new book, "Return to
Emptiness" as well as selling and signing his book. Mr . Ransick said he would also be appearing at the
Tattered Cover Bookstore, in Cherry Creek, on Monday, Dec . 13 1
h at 7:30 p.m .

Mr. Long said that he would be talking with a new Internet vendor. Target date for this new system is the
end of 2004 .
Ms. Pilgrim reminded all present about the upcoming Staff Appreciation luncheon on Wed., Nov. 17 from
11 :30-1 p.m.
Mr. Long said that the young adults, CELTS had held a very successful Halloween Party with 75 teens and
15 parents in attendance .
Nov. 29th is the beginning of the Food For Fines program that will run from November 29 through
December 12 . This program is in its 14th year. In the 14 years over $19 , 800 in food items have been
collected for Inter Faith Community Services. This winter for the first time 2 food items will cancel out 1
fine .
Mr. Long said that a previous computer glitch that had not allowed for EPL to loan books to other libraries
had been fixed so the Library is once again a lending library.
A discussion followed about the purchase of monthly flower arrangements for the Library. For the past 2
years the Friends and the Board have shared the cost of these flower arrangements. The Friends have
decided not to continue this for 2005. The Board agreed that they would also not continue to pay for the
arrangements. It was mentioned that perhaps the Board or the Friends could pay for flowers for special
occasions.

Mr. Adams said that everything is fine. He survived the election which prompted further discussion. He is
relieved to be writing again.

Mr. Tomasso said he and his family were in New York City recently and visited the Strand bookstore •
where workers were talking about a strike. The entire second floor of the bookstore is art and artwork. He
also related stories about his visit to Doylestown, PA and a tour he had of the Moravian Tile Works.
Mr. Ransick said when he had visited New York City in August he had gone to the New York City Library
and visited the rare book room. It took an hour to be admitted to the room due to being fingerprinted, etc.
He specifically went in to see a collection of William Blake's work. It was pure joy to see.
He said his wife; Shannon is working hard on their upcoming travel program in Feb. for the Friends of the
Library.
In May he will be leading a literary tour to England and Wales. The tour will accommodate 8 - 1 O people
who will spend 4 days in Bath, 2 -3 days in South Wales and 4 days in London.
Ms. Grazulis said she is off to California for 2 weeks with 7 dogs , a 12-year old, a 7 -year old to
participate in a dog show. Her daughter will be honored at the show , as she is the top junior in her
category in the country.
Ms . Cullinan related stories about her house remodel. She has a visitor from Guatemala.
Ms. Dounay said the School Board was very pleased with the election. Now the search for a new
superintendent beg ins . On the 18 th of November she and her husband are leaving on a vacation to
Ch icago for fun and Ann Arbor to see their daughter and son -in-law .
Ms. McGovern said she is glad that the quarter is finishing up at the University of Denver. It has been very
d ifficult with 14 students and lots of papers to read and grade , plus preparing to teach. In addition her job
at Wild Oats has gotten more demanding. •

Ms. Williams said she and her daughter had an excellent time in Boston together. While they were in
Boston the Red Sox won the World Series. It was all lots of fun. Her son and his wife came up from New
York City to see she and her daughter.
Ms. Clayton mentioned that the Children's Librarians have a program in January with nationally known
storyteller, Jim Weiss. The response to offering programs for grades 3 -5 with Mr. Weiss has been
excellent from Englewood Schools and the 2 parochial schools . The quest for authors for the Author Open
House in April is going very well.
Ms . Pilgrim said her visit to California went well. The colleges her daughter visited provided helpful
feedback : She visited her son in San Diego where he is doing well.
Mr. Long said it has been a stressful year. He is glad to see that there will be no reduction of staff or
budget for the next year.
There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m .
