MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
January 9, 2001
Chairperson, Sonie Smithers at 7:02 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: M. Dounay, L. Cahill, S. O'Leary, R.Ottoson, S. Smithers, B. Williams, Youth Member, Tara
Holmes and Council Member, Julie Grazulis (arrived late).
REGRETS : C . Belt, C. Ransick .
ALSO PRESENT: Unscheduled visitor, Mike Heberling; Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton,
Recording Secretary.
Before the business part of the meeting the Board visited with Mr.Heberling. He brought everyone up to
date on his college experiences at the University of Colorado . Mr. Heberling auditioned for the CU Choir
and was in turn invited to the music professor's studio class . This is quite an honor for a freshman. Mr .
Heberling returns to school tomorrow.
01-01 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of December 12, 2000 be accepted as written.

The Motion passed .
Ms . Smithers mentioned the upcoming travel program on France sponsored by the Friends of the Library
to be held on Thurs ., January 11 . The next meeting of the Friends will be Wed ., January 24 at 6:30 p .m.
Ms . Dounay said she had recently been at Flood Middle School where there were not enough copies of a
particular novel to give one to every student. She wondered if the Friends would ever or had considered
g iving donated copies of novels to the schools for their use . There was a brief discussion . It was
mentioned that this idea would be passed along to the Friends . The next travel program sponsored by the
Friends will be on Tues., Feb. 13 at 7 p.m., a conflict with the next Library Board meeting . This will also
occur in March . It was suggested that possibly the March travel program could be re-scheduled.
Ms. Dounay invited all present to the Englewood School District Open House to be held in all the schools
in the district on Tues ., January 30 from 3 :30 -7p .m . This is a chance for the community to see the work
done in the schools using the bond money that was voted on by the community. Mr. Long mentioned that
he was working with the school d istrict to donate the yellow shelves from the children's area in the old
library.
• Ms . Ottoson mentioned that the ILL statistics reflected a low number of books are being borrowed by EPL
from other libraries . Mr . Long said he felt this reflected well on the ordering librarians at Englewood and

being able to give the community what they need and want for book selections . Ms. Ottoson and Ms.
O'Leary shared their experiences with using the ILL system.
Ms . Smithers reminded all present about the Volunteer Recognition coming up on Sat., Jan. 27 at 10 a.m.
in the Community Room on the second floor. A sample of the gift that will be given to those volunteers
who give of their time was passed around the room.
A short discussion about Board Members applying for new terms followed. Ms . O'Leary said she had
already sent her application to the City Manager's office . Ms . Dounay said she was still deciding.
Mr. Long said that Gordon Barhydt of the Central Colorado Library System would be at the February
meeting to discuss the upcoming five-year planning process. This is a process that is done approximately
every five years. Mr. Long said in re-examining the last five-year plan all but one goal was attained. The
process will involve EPL staff, Library Board Members, and citizens from the community.
The next order of business was the election of officers for the coming year .

01 -04 Motion: Nominate Robin Ottoson as Vice Chair of the Public Library Board .

01 -05 Motion: That nominations be closed and Ms. Ottoson be elected by acclimation.

The Motion passed unanimously.
Mr. Long said the Library would be open on Monday, January 15, Martin Luther King's Birthday. Special
programming will be held throughout the day in the Library as well as at noon on the second floor in the
Community Room . Carol McGuigan of the Parks & Recreation Dept. will be present at the evening
program to share her experiences when she marched as a young woman .
Mr. Long said he is becoming more involved with the Englewood Historical Society and related grants that
have recently been awarded for wor k with the Englewood Depot and the Skerritt House .
His goals for the com ing year include changing cataloging records to Marc records, and upgrading the
Data Radio System on the Bookmobile .

Ms . Smithers asked if those present would be willing to change the start time of the February meeting to
6:30 p .m . All present agreed .

Ms. Dounay said that a student at Englewood High School, Matt Lancer had received a perfect score on
the ACT test. There is also a student, Nicole Davis, who is in the initial round for the Boettcher
Scholarship . She also proudly announced that her daughter, Amy is engaged to be married on Oct. 20 .
Amy will be getting her Doctorate in July or August and become Mrs . In October. In the fall she will be
go ing to the University of Calif. at Irv ine for postdoctoral work .
Ms. Cahill said that Girl Scout cookie sales begin on Sat., Jan .13 and she is thinking she will have no
other life for the ne xt 8 weeks!
Ms . O 'Leary sa id she has begun work ing aga in at the Capitol for Representative Lauri Clapp . It is fun .
Ms . Holmes sa id Christmas break was great as was winter interlude. She said she had totaled her car the
previous Fr iday night. Fortunately no one was injured, just the car. She said she is working at Alfalfa's and
en j oys it a lot. She will be stage-managing by herself the spring musical," 42nd Street". She also just found
out that she has been nom inated to the" Who's Who of High School Students".
Ms . Grazulis as ked about the Friend 's books on the shelves in the room . She mentioned that the
Historical Society has seve ral bo xes of books they could donate to the Fr iends for sale.
Ms . Ottoson sa id she is in a sta te of flux trying to decide whether to be a community organizer or a
lib rar ian . She is currently very involved wit Mennon ite Urban Ministries . Her son, Andrew made it home for
the hol idays .
Ms. Williams sa id her life is very dull! She will not be at the next meeting as she and her husband will be in
Mexico . Her grandson has spent most of his time playing basketball on the bench . His grades dropped so
athletics is being reconsidered at his house .
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8 :25 p .m .
