HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-03-13 PLB MINUTES• • • Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 80110 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX MINUTES Englewood Public Library Board March 13, 2001 Chairperson, Sonie Smithers at 7 :02 p.m, called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order . PRESENT: C . Belt, L. Cahill, S. O'Leary, R.Ottoson, K. Pilgrim , Y. Russell , S. Smithers , B. Williams, Youth Member, Tara Holmes and School Board Member, Mary Dounay. REGRETS: C . Ransick and Council Member, Jul ie Grazulis. ALSO PRESENT : Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. Ms . Smithers began the meeting with a welcome to the new members, Karen Pilgrim and Yvonne Russell as well as a welcome back to returning member, Shannon O'Leary and School Board Member, Mary Dounay. All other Board members in turn introduced themselves to the new members . 01-07 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of February 13 , 2001 be accepted as written. Moved by: Robin Ottoson Seconded by: Lorraine Cahill The Motion passed . Ms . Smithers reported that the travel programs sponsored by the Friends of the Library have been very successful. The ne xt program will be on Thursday, March 22 ay 7 p.m . about an African Safari. The Used Book Sale, which was held on Fri ., Feb . 23 & Sat., Feb . 24, was also very successful. The next Used Book Sale will be Friday, March 23 & Saturday, March 24 . Hours on Friday are noon - 2 p .m. and on Saturday from 10 -2 p.m . The Friends will be having a Bake Sale on Friday, May 4. Comments were made about the nice balance of items being added to the collection versus those being withdrawn. Reports were explained for the new members . Mr . Long reported that the first meeting of the Library Five -Year Planning Process will be on Tuesday, March 20 from 1 -4 p .m. in the Friends I Board Room . The committee will provide reports back to the Board each month . Board members who are not on the planning committee will in turn provide feedback to the planning committee. Ne xt for discussion was the annual Staff Appreciat ion Lunch that the Board has done for the past several years around National Library Week. It was decided to do this lunch in the summer, possibly after the summer read ing Program . Mr. Long mentioned the Englewood School District Art Show that has been in the Library during the month of March. Staff and patrons have enjoyed the student art. - 1 - Member's Choice Ms. O'Leary said she is still working at the Capitol as an aide to Representative Lauri Clapp on Monday and Friday mornings and having a good time doing that. Ms . Belt said she is getting better all the time after having had surgery in January. A brief discussion evolved about the books in the room on the bookshelves that are for sale at the Friend's Used Book Sale . The books in the room are mainly gift books that are not go ing to be added to the Library's collection and the books are priced higher than those in the Ongoing Book Sale which are priced at $1 for hardback books and 50 cents for paperbacks . These books are mainly books that have been discarded from the Library's collection . Ms. Cahill asked about the totals of books checked out on the Bookmobile. Mr. Long explained that there have been ongoing problems with the Data Radio system which runs the computers on the Bookmobile . This is why the system is scheduled for replacement later th is year . Ms. Cahill also noted she still has Girl Scout cookies available for sale after tonight's meeting . Ms. Pilgrim said she has a daughter at Isaac Newton Middle School in Littleton and her son who is 16 is a student at Mullen High School. Ms . Dounay said this is a busy time for her. She was recently in Nebraska for the birth of a new grand child in her family; Ms . Dounay is the proud new great aunt. Kudos to the cast of the h igh school mus ical , 42"d Street. Ms. Dounay said it was very exciting to see the student artwork on display in the Library; a friend who was visiting from Raton, New Mexico was also very impressed . Ms. Williams said her grandson is now playing rugby . Her granddaughter is taking voice lessons . Her son has been visiting from New York . Ms . Holmes had many hilarious stories about the play at the high school. Ms. Russell said she has nothing to add at this time. Ms . Clayton mentioned Nat ional Library week is coming the first week in April. If any Board members could give of some free time to help, please contact Mary Tatum , 303-762 -2569 . Ms . Smithers sa id her husband had "baby sat" for the ir granddaughter and had a ball. Ms . Smithers could not go , as she had the sniffles .
