PRESENT : C . Belt (left early), L. Cah ill , R.Ottoson (arrived late), K. Pilgrim , C . Ransick, Y. Russell, S . Smi thers, B. Williams, Youth Membe r, Tara Holmes , School Board Member, Mary Dounay and Council Member , Jul ie Grazulis (arrived late). REGRETS : S . O'Leary. ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long , Library Director and Joan Clayton , Recording Secretary. • 01-08 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of March 13, 2001 be accepted as written . • Moved by : Lorraine Cahill Seconded by : Karen Pilgrim The Motion passed. Ms .Smithers reported for the Friends of the Library . The next meeting of the Friends will be on Wed ., April 25 at 6 :30 p .m . The monthly book sales are do ing very well. The Friends have purchased a cash register to be used for the book sales as well as the bake sales. The travel programs have also been well received. The Friends recently voted to give the Library $600 for the purchase of Spanish language tapes and $400 for purchase of travel books for the Library collection . Those present commended the Friends on the amount of money raised by the book sales . Friends of the Library Cookbooks will be sold at the upcoming "Taste of Englewor;>d ", Thursday, May 10 sponsored by the Greater Englewood Chamber of Commerce . Ms . Holmes asked about the Bookmobile statistics . Mr . Long ex plained that the communication system is very poor and scheduled for replacement later this year . Ms . Smithers said that the Five -Year Planning Process is moving along well. Stakeholders have been identified as shown in the handout in the Board packet for this evening 's meeting . Ms. Smithers asked if the Board members had any stakeholders to add the list. All present agreed that stakeholders have been adequately identified . Questions arose about the impact of the Light Rail users as well as the impact of the new apartments in the City Center property and the General Iron property . Ms . Sm it hers said she had received a letter from the City Manager about attending an April 12 meet ing of Board and Comm iss ion members to give feedback to Deloitte & Touche about E-government issues . This is in tandem with the replacement of the City's information technology computer system . Mr . Long explained that the City has made a huge commitment to replace the outdated information technology system, wi th numerous City staff devoting many hours to the planning process . Mr . Long is currently - 1 - spending an average 12 -15 hours per week on this project, named IBIS. IBIS stands for I mproving B • usiness I ncreasing S ervice . The project is scheduled to take 1 Yi to 2 years to fully implement. The meeting on Thurs., April 12 is to investigate ways to help the City deliver services more effectively. This meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room on the second floor . Ms . Russell indicated she would like to attend for the Board. Mr. Long introduced for discussion the proposed House Bill 1376, which requires filters on all computers in schools and libraries. If passed, this would force the City to replace the current system at Englewood Library which allows parents to determine the level for their own child when using the Internet. Discussion followed. Mr. Long mentioned that the Colorado Library Association has come out in opposition to this Bill . Ms.Smithers said she thought it would be prudent to write City Council asking them to write a letter of opposition to this Biii. 01 -09 M otion: That the Englewood Public Library Board send a letter to the appropriate state legislators asking them not to support proposed House Bill 1376. Moved by : Bervette Williams Seconded by: Lorraine Cahill 01 -10 Motion: That the Englewood Public Library Board draft a letter to City Council asking them to oppose proposed House Bill 1376. Moved by : Chris Ransick Seconded by : Lorraine Cahill A copy w ill also be sent to the Colorado Library Association . Ms . Pilgrim asked if the Englewood School Board is also looking into this Bill. Ms. Dounay said she represents the Englewood School Board on the state level and assured Ms . Pilgrim that they are on top of all proposed legislation. Member's Choice Mr. Ransick asked who was in charge of acquisitions as he had a suggested title of a book published locally . Mr. Long explained that each area of the collection is assigned to a Reference librarian for ordering purposes. Mr. Ransick 's suggested title is a collection of stories and poems from local authors, himself included. Mr . Ransick said he had been coaching hockey but is now back in the groove, after coaching his team of youths to a second in the state finish. Ms. Russell said it was nice to see everyone. Ms. Pilgrim said her son's lacrosse team was doing well. Ms . Cahill said the Girl Scout cookie sale had been awesome. Her daughter earned enough to send herself to camp this summer. Ms .Ottoson said she had had a job offer which she is considering . If the weather holds she is planning a visit to see her son at college. Ms. Grazulis said that the Englewood Holiday Parade will be held in November, and the route will be down Dartmouth to Inca and into the City Center site. Volunteers are needed for the Parade . The next Parade meeting will be held on May 1st. 11 a.m . on the 3rd floor, Community Development conference room . Ms. Grazulis mentioned that Mayor Tom Burns had recently received the prestigious John Christensen Award. She also mentioned that she had observed a Library staff member the previous week doing a superb job of helping a patron . Ms . Belt said it had been a week of meetings, which was challenging as she had out of town company at the same time. She then excused herself from the meeting . -2 - • • r • • Ms . Holmes said she has started working on a new play, "You can 't take it with you ". This will be a real challenge as the director is new to her job . Ms. Williams said that not much is going on. Ms . Dounay said she is busy working on the Parade . She thanked Ms. Grazulis for all of her help . This will be the 31 st year for the Englewood Holiday Parade . Englewood High School has a National Merit Scholarship final ist, Matt Lancer . It has been quite a while since the High school had had a finalist. The Parade and her daughter' upcoming marriage plans are taking a lot of her free time . Ms . Smithers sa id she and her husband had gotten a computer so now Ms . Smithers has control of the remote control ! Ms . Smithers complimented Carol W il bur's work on the h is tory site on the Library's web page . Ms . Grazu li s seconded the compliment. Ms . Smithers said she thought that the Board should send a letter of congratulations to Mayor Burns . All present agreed . She agreed to write the letter . There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8 :30 p .m . -3 -
