HomeMy WebLinkAbout2001-05-08 PLB MINUTES• • • Call To Order/Roll Call 1000 Englewood Parkway, Englewood, CO 8011 O 303-762-2560 Voice 303-783-6890 FAX MINUTES Englewood Public Library Board May 8, 2001 Chairperson, Sonie Smithers at 7:03 p .m , called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to order. PRESENT : C. Belt , K. Pilgrim, C . Ransick, Y . Russell , S. Smithers, B. Williams, Youth Member, Tara Holmes, School Board Member, Mary Dounay. REGRETS : S. O 'Leary, L . Cahill, R.Ottoson and Council Member, Julie Grazulis . ALSO PRESENT: Emily Pilgrim, Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary. Ms . Pilgrim introduced her daughter, Emily who was observing the Library Board meeting for a school class assignment. 01-08 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of April 10 , 2001 be accepted as written. Moved by : Chris Ransick Seconded by : Karen Pi lgrim The Motion passed . Ms .Smithers reported for the Friends of the Library. The next meeting of the Friends will be on Wed., May 23 at 6:30 p.m . at All For the Better Ice Cream Store. The Bake Sale earlier this month netted around $500, to be used for the Library. There will be a monthly used book sale on Friday, May 25 from noon until 2 p.m . and on Saturday, May 26 from 10 -2 p.m. It was commented that it was good to see the monthly statistics on the rise. Ms . Dounay reported that from the focus groups in the schools for the 5 -year planning committee the students had commented how much they like the new library. Ms. Smithers said she and her husband had overheard similar comments at a local coffee shop . Ms . Holmes said that her co-workers at Alfalfas also expressed appreciation for the new library. Ms. Smithers said the 5 -year planning process is continuing with focus groups in the community . School groups, Chamber of Commerce groups , "elder citizens" and others have been queried . Those who have participated with the focus groups said it is interesting how the perception of the Library is influenced by the emotional, mental and physical health of the individuals . Children seem to know little about the library. This is reflective of a market ing challenge for the library. Mr. Long mentioned that Mr. Barhydt's mother had died recently . A card was sent on behalf of the Board to Mr . Barhydt. The next meeting of the 5-year planning group w ill be concerned with the mission statement. Mr. Long said that House Bill 1376 had "died" in the state legislature as of May 8, 2001. A second bill aimed at restricting Internet access had also "died". City Council did sign a letter of support supporting the - 1 - Board 's recent stand on House Bill 1376. Ms. Smithers passed around the table a thank-you note from Mayor Burns to the Board. Ms . Smithers said that the Staff Appreciation lunch I dinner would be after Summer Reading at the end of August. Ms. Smithers asked for volunteers to help with the dinner/lunch . Ms . Cahill , Ms. Pilgrim, Ms. Williams and Ms . Smithers volunteered to be the committee in charge of the meal. Other Board members will be contacted for additional help. Mr. Long said that the Bookmobile was recently involved in an accident while parked behind the Civ ic Center building . A Federal Express truck was making a delivery and backed into the front of the Bookmobile . The vehicle will be off the road until repairs are completed. Mr . Long displayed a plaque of appreciation from the Englewood Schools given to the Englewood Library. Mr . Long noted that there had been a materials challenge of a children's book . The copy of the challenge letter was in tonight's meeting packet. A committee will be needed after staff reviews have been collected. Gheroghe Stanescu has done a bas relief of Governor Owens, which Mr. Stanescu would like to present to the governor. Mr. Long has contacted Representative Lauri Clapp for help with this . Ms . Clapp has said she will help facil itate a meeting to present the bronze . Member's Choice Ms. Belt said her daughter is training to compete in a triathlon to be held in August in Canada. The Board wished her daughter well. Ms . Pilgrim said all is going well. The countdown until the end of the school year is ongoing . Ms . Holmes shared pictures of her prom with the Board. She mentioned that she had put a tribute to the Library board in the program for the upcoming high school play. Because she will be going to Girl's State at Western State College June 10 -15 , Ms . Holmes will not be at the next Library Board meeting . In Ms .Ottoson's absence Ms . Holmes announced that Ms . Ottoson is the new library director at Colorado Christian University. Ms . Russell said her neighborhood; Arapahoe Acres is having a large garage sale on May 12. Ms . Dou nay said it is a busy time. She along with Kathleen Cook of the Circulation staff have done 6 focus groups in different schools . The schools choose the participants for the groups so a broad spectrum is represented . The pr imary students are very verbose . Wedding plans continue along with family celebrations . Ms . Williams said she had enjoyed working with Ms. Pat Jurgens doing focus groups for "elder citizens". Mr. Ransick said it had been a great day; he was on summer break, he had graded his last paper of the year, and planted tomatoes . He is looking forward to coaching a "feeder" baseball team for the freshman high school team . Mr. Ransick invited the Board to help celebrate his wife's 401 h birthday on June 9. A party will be held at his house and all are welcome . Ms. Clayton said her son; Dan had successfully defended his PhD. Thesis and is now Dan Clayton, PhD . Mr . Long mentioned that the Friends would be sell ing cookbooks at the Taste of Englewood on Thursday , May 10. There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 8 p.m . -2 - • • •
