MINUTES
Englewood Public Library Board
June 12, 2001
Chairperson, Sonie Smithers at 7 :00 p.m , called the meeting of the Englewood Public Library Board to
order.
PRESENT: L. Cahill, (left early), S . O 'Leary, K. Pilgrim , Y. Russell, S . Sm ithers , B . Williams, School Board
Member, Mary Dounay, and Council Member, Julie Grazulis .
REGRETS : C. Belt , C . Ransick, R.Ottoson and Youth Member, Tara Holmes.
ALSO PRESENT: Hank Long, Library Director and Joan Clayton, Recording Secretary.
01-12 Motion: That the minutes of the meeting of May 8,2001 be accepted as written .

The Motion passed .
Ms . Smithers reported for the Friends of the Library ; the next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday,
September 26 at 6 :30 p .m. in the Friends ' Room . There will not be monthly book sales during the summer
months . The ne xt scheduled monthly book sales are Friday, September 28 and Saturday, September 29 .
The Friends will be sponsoring a Travel Program on Kuwait, Thursday, September 13 at 7 p .m .
Mr. Long said that the Bookmobile is back on the road . It spent most of the month of May be ing repaired
after the accident involving a Fed Ex truck .
The 5 -year planning committee did not meet June 11 due to Mr. Barhydt's health problems .
Mr. Long asked for volunteers to serve on a committee of Board members to review "The Enormous
Crocodile" by Roald Dahl. With the request for reconsideration a written report is needed by the July
meeting to be forwarded on to the patron who had filed the request. Ms . Cahill, Ms. Russell and Ms .
Pilgrim will review the book and submit a written report to the Board at the July meeting .
Mr. Long will be at the American Library Association convention in San Franc isco June 15 -19.
A letter was sent by registered mail to a patron informing him that he is no longer welcome at the
Englewood Public Library due to a series of past abuses of Library policies. The patron refused to accept
the letter. Attempts by the police department to serve the letter were to no avail. The letter is at the
Reference desk to be given to the patron should he come in to the library .

Member's Choice
Ms. Williams said things are quiet at her house so she has been able to read several books. A short
discussion about lost library books, grandchildren and money for chores followed . Ms . Williams said her
granddaughter had the highest math score in her school of 3.9.
Ms. Clayton talked about the upcoming Summer Reading Program, which starts Monday, June 25 . There
are reading programs for children, young adults and adults .
Ms. O'Leary said she had been busy with travel for her work in May, going to Atlanta and New Jersey. Her
son had been awarded a savings bond as a prize in an essay contest at Charles Hay Elementary School
at the school's continuation program .
Ms . Grazulis said the City would be hosting a First Year celebration on Thursday, June 14 to celebrate
Civic Center's first year. The celebration will include a Tent Talk , birthday bags , cake and free Bar-B-Que.
She mentioned the new brochure for the Englewood Cultural Arts Center. There are on display 5 models
for a proposed cultural arts center . This plan is a spin-off from the Cultural Arts Commission, which has
been meeting for almost 2 years planning the center . As of now there is no site for the arts center. Ms .
Grazulis proudly said both of her daughters had finished the school year with 4.0 grade point averages .
She mentioned that she would be attending CML in Aspen the last week in June and would report to the
Board at the July meeting.
Ms . Dounay said that the past week had been a lousy one for the Englewood School District. Graduations
for CFAHS and Englewood High School both went well. She said that she had never before had to give a
diploma to a family that had lost a child . The Bookmobile Committee has given $1,500 to programming for
books and fun stuff for the Summer Reading Program on the Bookmobile. Englewood High School Senior,
Matt Lanser was awarded a National Merit Scholarship, ranking 23rd in the nation.
Ms . Cahill said she is glad that school is almost over . She is going to Missoula, Montana with her mother
to visit family. Her son and daughter are going to scout camps .
Ms . Russell said she is off work until Aug .14 and looking forward to the time off. She is work ing with a
neighborhood project, a driveway movie festival, planned for around the Neighborhood Watch Night Out.
Ms. Pilgrim said they had bought her son a car . Both her son and daughter finished the school year with
good GPA's, 3 .9 and 4.0 respectively .
The question of what is being done with the old City Hall was discussed. There are currently 3 proposals
under discussion with the City .
Ms. Holmes sent a short report to the Board. She has re-applied for the Library Board for another year.
She is enjoying Girls State. A copy of the program from the play, "You Can't Take it With You" was passed
around .
Ms . Smithers said she plans to spend the summer taking her mother places.
There being no further business the meeting was adjourned at 7 :55 p .m.
