At the May 11th meeting of the Clean, Green, and Proud
Commission, several items were discussed. Those discussions are
outlined below .
l. Fourth Annual Bag-A-Thon: Glazier announced that 1255
volunteers had signed up to participate in this year's Bag-A-
Thon. The May lst event attracted about 50 people. Glazier and
Commission members agreed that this year was a success despite
the chilly weather. All agreed that the program should continue.
Glazier asked if there should be any changes in next year's
program. It was suggested that the use of a tent during bad
weather would be advantageous. It was also suggested that more
environmental educational booths be sought to participate.
2. Proud Prooertv Proqram: June 26th was chosen for the Second
Annual Proud Property Program. Glazier asked for volunteers to
help with this year's effort. Bonnie Prado, Rhonda Davis, and
Mary Jackson volunteered. Glazier stated that flyers would be
distributed shortly to announce the program.
3. Municipal Solid Waste Plan: Each Commission member was asked
their impressions regarding the public's input to the forum. In
summary, the Commission agreed the curbside collection was a
proposal to be dropped. In addition, it was felt that mandatory
collection proposal was very controversial, and the recycling
proposal was misunderstood. A strong opinion of the public was
that more enforcement of existing codes need take place. And,
the Commission felt there was a lot of emotion and misinformation
regarding MSW issues and the proposal in the community.
The Commission also was receptive to two issues that were raised
by the public; contract hauling and equity. Both of these
interests, it was decided, needed to be re-addressed by the
Commission. But, because of the large number of members absent,
the Commission decided to wait until the June meeting to
thoroughly discuss these topics. Phillip Russell distributed a
copy of several suggestions to address concerns of the public.
It was decided to discuss these at the next meeting.
