Rita Hathaway, City Council Representative Lee Merkel, Director of Community Development Donald Roth, Englewood Citizen Dana Glazier, Coordinator The Clean, Green, and Proud Commission met January 12, 1993 to discuss several topics. Highlights of those discussions are presented below. I. MSW Plan: Glazier distributed the lasted draft of the ordinance changes that would require 1) street side pick-up of trash, 2) mandatory collection, and 3) the offering of recycling service by haulers. Means and Glazier discussed City Council's reaction to the proposed changes. Both felt that Council was supportive and appreciative of the work the Commission had undertaken in the MSW Plan. It was the general understanding that Council wished for the Commission to continue with the proposed changes and that the Commission should propose how best to inform and educate the citizens of Englewood about the necessity of the changes. Once the implementation plan was established it was to be presented to Council. The Commission then went on to discuss the public's reaction to the proposed MSW Plan. Much discussion ensued as to the reasons behind the proposed MSW Plan. The Commission agreed that these reasons were still valid and that an educational campaign was needed for the public to fully understand the issues. The Commission discussed several ways in which this educational campaign could be carried out. One, articles could be written in the ''Englewood Citizen" explaining activities the Commission has undertaken, including the MSW Plan. Articles could also be written explaining the specifics of the MSW Plan, hopefully to encourage public support. Second, after the Clean, Green & Proud Commission • City of Englewood 3400 South Elati Street • Englewood, CO 80110 • (303) 762-2348 educational campaign, a statistical survey should be mailed out to more specifically gauge the public's reaction to the proposal. .- And lastly, it was suggested to implement an educational campaign solely to inform citizens about the alley situation. Glazier stated he would present some specific ideas at the next meeting. II. Future Issues in MSW: At the November meeting, Glazier presented two programs for the Commission's consideration: an environmental seminar aimed at small and medium sized businesses and a leaf and grass drop off program. Glazier stated that since that meeting, progress for the environmental seminar were moving forward. Glazier explained that goal of the seminar was to educate decision makers of small to medium sized firms about proper environmental options. Glazier explained that the City has applied for a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to offset costs of the program. Additionally, the Denver University National Center for Preventative Law has made a commitment to help with logistics and provide expert speakers. Glazier asked the Commission for direction for the leaf and grass drop-off programs. The Commission felt it was a worthy program to research and possibly implement. Glazier stated he would research options available and report back to the Commission at a later date. III. Glad Bag-A-Thon: Glazier asked the Commission their thoughts regarding where and how to present the 4th Annual Bag-A-• Thon. The Commission felt that the public's turn out would be best at the Plaza at Little Dry Creek. Breakfast would be served to volunteers who would then be directed to specific clean-up spots. Glazier asked for help from Commission members to organize this year's event. IV. Other Business: Glazier passed out both pens and certificates to Commission members from Mayor Wiggins in appreciation of their service. There will be a reception honoring volunteers of the Adopt-A- Street Program February 16, 1993 at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall. Commission members were encouraged to attend. •
