VII. SOUTH PLATTE RIVER CLEANUP Mr. Fruchtl asked if any of us had seen Dean as of late. Dean's input is necessary since he is who has headed up this event in the past. No decision was made regarding KEB's participation. VIII. LEAF AND TIRE DROP-OFF Co-chair Bippus stated it is too early to report on this event; it will occur in November. IX. BROTHERS' REDEVELOPMENT PAINT-A-THON KEB Commi ss ioners expressed no interest in p art icip a ting in this community program. x. soTH ANNUAL KAB CONFERENCE Mr. Fruchtl encouraged participation and instructed us to think about whether we want to ap- prove funds to se nd any commissioners to the Conference. A decision needs to be m a de by Oc- tober or November. XI. PHONE BOOK RECYCLING Due to debris in the dumpster and the inadequate type of signs provided for the dumpster, we m ay need to do something different next time . Too many resources were spent on maintaining the most recent recycling effort. Mr. Crotty mentioned how well newspaper recycling goes - generally no debris in those bins . Discuss ion ensued re: using closed dumpsters at a less se- cluded loc at ion . The location must be on City property. Excessive debris remaining from the March blizzard was part of the problem this time, as was location. XII. STAFF'S CHOICE Mr. Fruchtl informed us th at Wastewater Management Service has requested KEB's help. They want to partner with us to provide inform a tion in our illIW packets . Also , Wastewater Man- agement wants to do a stenciling program regarding "No Dumping" wherein Wastewater Man- agement does the work and KEB funds the project. We are to think about this suggestion . Mr. Fruchtl circulated a new KEB roster for proof reading . Regarding illIW, Mr. Fruchtl will review insurance costs. He is also working with the transfer station concerning cones and signs needed for this event. The Humane Society has expressed interest in conducting "Adopt-A-Pet" in conjunction with the illIW event. KEB is , apparently, the only KAB affiliate requesting the use of items requested. Ms . Langon is rewriting Engelwood 's zoning code. Ms. Fenton is no longer with our Commis- sion , and Ms. Welty is new to the staff details of KEB. Please be patient with Mr. Fruchtl; he may be slow in returning calls while adjustments are accomplished. XIII. CHAIR'S CHOICE KEB will enjoy a potluck for our next meeting on September 9 . Mr. Crotty offered to host the occasion at his home, 1313 East Cornell Avenue (near Cornell and Marion). Tables are needed. Mr. Crotty w i ll provide drinks. Commissioners are free to bring any type of food they choose and one other adult each. No one under 18, please. David Brereton and Janet Barens, former Commissioners, will be invited. Jared Holmes of the Boy Scouts contacted Ms. Ferber to discuss "Good Tum Week", something Boy Scouts are doing . They wish to volunteer their help with us for an event. Mr. Fruchtl will check regarding liability. Conversation ensued concerning the South Platte River Cleanup and the Leaf a nd Tire Drop-off as po ss ible Boy Scout participations. South Suburban is in charge of the South Platte River cleanup. Ms. Ferber will follow up with Mr. Holmes. Ms . Ferber revisited her fund-raiser idea of KEB conducting a SK walk or run. Mr. Crotty dis- cussed the timing , publicity , and sponsorship issues. Research on these is s ues is needed. Cur- rently , Englewood does not have a ny SKs , so there is likely to be tremendous interest in having one. Mr. Kinton brought up concern about what time of year the event would be held. Ms. Fer- ber suggested that we work around other community events, and advertise only at the recreation center and in the "Citizen ". Mr. Fruchtl suggested holding the SK in conjunction with Fun Fest in August of next year. The times of day and year are concerns. Ms. Ferber and Mr. Fruchtl ex- plained that early morning is the best a nd us ual time for SKs. Mr. Roth expressed that we need more informa tion before we can decide on the SK topic. Concerns about blocking off streets and police availability need to be addressed. Mr. Fruchtl indicated that the EPD would volunteer for the event. It is decided: ~ Mr. Crotty will do research. ~ A SK feasibility committee is established-Ms. Ferber, Mr. Crotty, Mr. Kinton. ~ The committee will start planning. ~ Mr. Kinton suggested starting the SK at Sports Authority (formerly Gart Brothers), and combining the event with next year's Fun Fest. ~ Ms. Ferber wants to narrow down a date by next month for the SK Ms. Ferber asked commissioners if we want to participate in Fun Fest this year. No , we do not. Ms. Ferber suggested having a booth there. No interest was generated. XIV. COMMISSIONER'S CHOICE H:\GROUP\BOARDS \Keep Englewood Beautiful\Minutes\2003\8-2003 Minutes.doc 3 • • Ms . She will e-mail/call to let us know . Mr. Roth completed the KAB-required litter index with Mr. Stankorb. Englewood "scored 1.5 , whatever that means!" Mr. Kinton as ked if the phone book recycling bin is available all of the time . Mr. Fruchtl ex- plained the bin is available 1-l l/2 months, twice a year. Mr. Kinton expressed that since it is a hassle to recycle items in Englewood, having to go to different locations for different items , maybe the phone book recycling could be coordinated with other recycling . Messrs . Crotty and Fruchtl discussed space availability at Trolley Squa re (former n a me of shopping center at King Soopers). W aste Man agement has newspaper bins there and is out of room for more bins . M s. Bippus suggested a sp ace at Federal and Belleview . Others suggested placing a phone book re- cycling bin at Sports Authority , in conjunction with KEB 's SK. The group agreed with this ide a . XV.
