CALL TO ORDER Chair Ferber called the regular meeting of the Keep Englewood Beautiful Commission to order at 6 :35 p.m. Present: Absent: Staff: Janet Berens, David Brereton, Eric Crotty, Jackie Edwards, Samara Ferber, Daryl Kinton, Ann Nabholz, Linda Olson, Kent Nicholas, Don Roth Jennifer Bippus, Susan Grant, Dean Huffaker, Joe Serrano, Ronald Smith, Jerry Stankorb Anthony Fruchtl, Staff Liaison II. APPROVAL OF MINUTES David Brereton moved; Linda Olson seconded : THE MINUTES OF THE MARCH 11 , 2003 MEETING BE APPROVED AS WRITIEN . Motion carried . Ill. VOLUNTEER HOURS Staff distributed and coll ected volunteer hour forms. IV. ARBOR DAY Janet Berens brought a 5-gallon bucket and article about saving shower water. Brochures from Country Fair were distributed concerning xeriscape gardening. Ms. Beren s also circulated a Lawn & Garden newspaper insert dated April 4, 2003 and Home Depot ads regarding conserving water. Ms. Berens announced that O 'Toole's gave flats of flowers and seeds for Arbor Day. She circulated a flyer from America the Beautiful Fund, a fund that provides free seeds. Discussion ensued regarding miscommunication between the Parks Department and the Commission as to who is doing what for Arbor Day. Anthony Fruchtl will contact the Parks Department on April 9 concerning the purchase of plants at a discount. Jackie Edwards announced that Susan Jean , a guest at the Commission's March meetin g, rescinded her offer to conduct a composting demonstration for Arbor Day . 1 • • • Eric Crotty moved; Don Roth seconded : TO APPROVE FUNDS AS NEEDED , UP TO $500, FOR ARBOR DAY. Motion carried . Ideas discussed for Arbor Day were a demonstration of xeriscaping, no-cost raffle of plants, and handing out educational pamphlets. Mr. Fruchtl will print up coupons for use as raffle tickets and volunteer contacts . He will reconfirm the A rbor Day plans with the Parks Department. V. GOOD NEIGHBOR DAYS Mr. Fruchtl stated he contacted Waste Management regarding the coupons . Distribution dates were reviewed and a sign-up sheet was circulated . VI. GOLF TOURNAMENT The golf tournament is scheduled for Monday, June 9. Postcards will be mailed out next week to last y ear 's participants with a follow-up letter in two weeks. Anthony distributed a copy of the golf letter regardin g donations and sponsorships for the tournament. Donation receipts were also distributed . VII. MARKETING Eric Crotty brought forth discussion on how to use and distribute Commission posters. Additions and deletions were discussed . The Commission decided to remove the City logo and sponsors and to add the KAB logo. Mr. Fruchtl will contact KAB for artwork and an y potential problem with using the logo. Chair Ferber suggested adding a statement that informs volunteers to call. Recycled paper will be used for the posters. Daryl Kinton brought up the topic of movie theater advertising. AMC Theaters in Highlands Ranch were suggested as a possibility. Daryl informed the Commission that most people bu y one-third of the theaters, about 8 screens, at $160 for a three week period . The ads run constantly during that period. The Commission would need to provide the theaters with a slide . Other theaters are comparable but require longer runs . The Commission discussed whether to advertise at the Highlands Ranch Theater. Daryl also indicated that Madstone Theater along Hampden has offered the Commission a trade of possibly having their items in the Golf Tournament goodie bags. Chair Ferber suggested Daryl contact all the theaters for goodie bag items. Mr. Fruchtl provided information regarding bus shelters. RTD permits large posters at the bus shelter s. The Commission would need to give RTD a mock-up and RTD provides the 2 ---__________________ _, • posters. Mr. Fruchtl suggested using the KAB artwork of the Crying Indian and the Commission's logo as the sponsor for the bus stop posters. The KAB artwork can be obtained via e-mai l. VIII. CHAIR'S CHOICE Chair Ferber stated she would have information regarding cell phone recycling for the May meeting. IX. COMMISSIONER'S CHOICE Janet Berens informed the Commission of a new Englewood ice cream parlor. Ann Nabholz reminded the Commission of the EJ2 Celebration set for Friday, May 9 through Tuesday, May 13, 2003. A schedule of the events was distributed. Jackie Edwards explained prices and possibilities for a new supply of Commission polo shirts. Catalogs with numerous choices were shown. Jackie will bring in samples of a few suitable shirts at the May meeting or ask a representative from an Englewood shirt company to bring samples. Chair Ferber suggested asking for goodie bag items from the shirt/advertising distributors. Eric Crotty mentioned the Englewood's Entryport Project, the grass sculpture on South • Broadway. • David Brereton urged the Commission to push the golf tournament. The Commission needs 80 to 100 goodie bags with sponsor/acknowledgement items. X. STAFF'S CHOICE Anthony Fruchtl stated the Commission will do another round of phone book recycling from June 18 to July 22. Qwest is recycling area white and yellow pages. Since the area phone books are smaller, only one roll off is needed. David Brereton moved; Kent Nicholas seconded: TO APPROVE FUNDS UP TO $300 FOR A RECYCLING ROLL OFF AT ACOMA STREET AND ENGLEWOOD PARKWAY. Motion carried. David stated he would contact Qwest before April 15 . 3 • • • Anthony distributed the Community Development Annual Report. Anthony urged the Commission to find discounts on printing and to also use recycled paper for all printed material. XI. ADIOURN There was no further business to be brought before the Commission.
