Meeting Opening MINUTES February 1 O, 2009 City Council Conference Room The meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. in the City Council Conference Room. Chair Rothe presiding. 2. Roll Call Present: Sunshine Cross, Brett East, Linda Olson, Tom Rothe, Theresa Sabrsula, Tom Winthrop, Susan Bayless, Jennifer Jones, Gary Norlander, Bob Mccaslin (Not voting), Audra Kirk (Not voting), Cal Grant, Dianna Miguez, Mila Pilz, Jimmy Pinzenscham. • Absent/Excused: James Garnett. • Commissioners and new members introduced themselves. Former Commissioners welcomed the new members, and the new members shared how they heard about the Commission via the City's website. 3. Approval of Minutes Motion: Approve the January 13, 2009 Minutes as written. Moved by Susan Bayless, Seconded by Sunshine Cross. Motion passed unanimously. ~ 4. Old Business • Comprehensive Plan Subcommittee Gary Norlander conducted a six-question survey, based on the environmental goals outlined in the City's Comprehensive Plan, at CityCenter on how the Commission is progressing its goals within the City. Gary provided the Commission with an overview. He interviewed 17 people. Gary will email staff the survey and the results. Chair Rothe noted that Commission events are not advertised sufficiently in the Englewood Citizen. • • • ~ Gary suggested using the survey results to make others more aware of th e Commission and its events. The subcommittee can explore different venues to make that possible . The Commission now has access to public service announcements throu gh Keep America Beautiful. Discussion ensued regarding how best to use PSA's . It was suggested askin the communication's class at the high school to create an ad for the PSA program . Gary Norlander, Linda Olson, and Jimmy Pinzenscham are the members of the subcommittee. • Education /CAC Subcommitte e Susan Bayless is the new chair. Diana Miguez volunteered to be on the subcommitte e. Susan spoke to Denver Urban Gardens regarding their programs in the schools . She also met with the new superintendent for Englewood Schools. David Henderson is in charge of the "green program" for the entire Englewood school system . Susan emailed Mr. Henderson indicating the Commission's interest to become more involv ed in the schools . Linda Olson stated the DU students who worked with th e Commission last year are interested in volunteering again. Tom Winthrop updated the Commission on the Englewood school board meeting regarding environmental issues. The school has a blog, which he will forward to Audra . 5. New Business ~ • Arbor Day -The Parks Department would appreciate the Commission 's participation on Arbor Day. It will be held Saturday, April 18 at Centennial Park . Audra will have a sign-up sheet at next month's meeting. • Recreation Garden -Chair Rothe explained the garden for the new Commissioners . Audra stated that on February 26, noon, at the Servicenter the Parks Departm e nt is hosting a luncheon for everyone who participated in last year's program. Discussion ensued regarding a possible vegetable/salsa garden rather than flowers for the 2009 garden. The Commission also discussed researching a community garden . 6. Staff's Choice Audra welcomed the new Commissioners and thanked them for being part of the Commission. She met with the KAB representative; Audra found it very energizing. Audra informed the Commission that she will be attending a grant information seminar to determine if the Commission can apply for a grant for the Household Hazardous Waste program. She will also be meeting with Rooney Road board members to determine costs . Discussion ensued on how to obtain a KAB state representative . • ~ 7. Council Member's Choice Bob McCaslin welcomed the new members. Bob will bring the new bio-degradable pens to the next meeting. ~ 8. Commissioner's Choice vtll • Susan Bayless -There will be a Green Festival at the Denver Convention Center on May 2 and 3. She suggested having appointing an event chair for each Commission event. • Gary Norlander -The Shriners have recycling bins at their building on Logan and Floyd. There is also a public recycling bin at Bishop Elementary. • Sunshine Cross -Englewood schools are doing a fundraiser on February 26, 4:30 - 7:00 pm to raise funds to send 7th graders to Washington, DC • Mila Pilz -She asked about the procedure on placing KAB posters in the schools. She also asked for information on the meeting time and packets for the subcommittees. • Brett East -Susan Bayless, Audra, and she discussed conducting a garden tour during Englewood Days. It would be a self-guided tour, similar to the Art about Tour. The topic will be placed on the agenda for next month. • 9. Adjourn • There was no further business brought before the Commission. The meeting adjourned at 7:50 pm .
