Approval of Minutes Motion: Approve the February 10, 2010 Minutes as written, Moved by Gary Nordland e r, Seconded by Susan Bayless . Motion carried. llll 4. Honey Bee Presentation Doug Cohn presented information to the Commission regarding the importance of honey b ees to the environm e nt, colony collapse disorder, and how to make Englewood a "bee friendly City ." For En g lewood to become a bee friendly city, herbicides and pesticid es need to b e di sc ontinued ; b ee friendly plants need to be planted ; and wild zones created . Additionally, r es id e nts can obtain a permit to have a bee hive at their r esidenc e . Th e Commission will recommend the Parks Department give away Linden trees at their Arbor Day event. Brett and Susan will talk to Mike Norris with the Parks Department about planting be e friendly plants in the City flower beds . The Commission sugg e sted Mr. Cohn write an articl e for the Citizen, contact the environmental group at Englewood High School , and contact Tom Mund s about doing an article for the Englewood Herald . • 5. Garden Tour 2010 • • Su san sugg ested a tentative date of July 10. She asked Commissioner s to let her know as soon as pos sible if they know of any conflicting events. ~ 6. Old Business ~ • Community Garden : There was a good turnout for the community m eeting. Approximately 18 plots have been taken . People are very excited about the garden. DUG have been an invaluable partner. There are 9.5 plots left; 2 plots are designated for Food Bank. • Adopt-a-Garden : The Commission can still maintain the flower garden at the Recreation Center; but the Parks De partment would like the staff at the Recreation Center to take over that garden. There is a new garden at the dog park and two garden s by the Blockbuster. Another alternative is one of the rai sed beds in front of th e depot. The Commission's consensus was to choose a prominent spot, which is the depot. Susan will talk to the Parks Department regarding the water situation. • Composting Class : Gary discussed the composting class at the Malley Center on March 20, 10 a.m . -noon . 7. New Business ~ • Arbor Day : The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 17 at Cushing Park, 8 a.m . - noon, and is sponsored by the Parks Department. Audra distributed a signup sheet . • Earth Day: The event is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, and is sponsored by South Suburban . They will be cleaning up Big Dry Creek . Audra distributed a signup sheet . • Englewood Cleanup Coupons : The Commission discussed the name of the ev e nt . It was the consensus of the Commission to keep the name. 8. Staff's Choice Audra had nothing further. 9. Council Member's Choice Jill had nothing further . • • • laJ 10. Commissioner's Choice Tom talked to Arlene from Englewood High School. There currently is not anyone that would like to help with the community garden. However, as graduation gets a bit closer students may need hours. Tom will revisit the topic. laJ 11.
