Mr. Clayton shared copies of a letter from Northglenn which provides in- formation concerning trash hauling and related costs. Mr. Clayton expressed the belief that it is tiae for the City to aove toward a city-wide trash col- lection system, utilizing private trash haulers if possible. City Manager Fraser COllllented upon the recycling prograa coaaencing soon. Mr. Clayton of- fered that the recycling progr111 differs froa trash collection •andated by the City, which is what he is proposing. He would like Council to start thinking in this direction. 2. Mr. Clayton shared infonution froa an article in the Washington Post regarding transtt systeas and the deficits betng experienced tn the various ctttes. 3. In October 1988 the C:.mpus Outreach Opportunity League and Youth Service America organized and ran the fint national youth service day, "A Day in the Life of Youth Service." Over 10,000 young people participated. celebrating what they do u volunteers every day. On April 27, 1990 an npanded "National Youth Service Day" brought together 331 mayors. 13 governors. and more than 1,500 local organiutions to conduct recognition ceremonies, prns confftencft. c:oaunemorative MrVice proi«ts and special celebrations in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each mayor and city must design "National Youth Service Day" to be consistent with their needs, resources, and local circumstances. Following are suggested activities that may call public and media attention to youth service. Spotlight On Youth . . Publicize projects that highlight the many good things that are already being done by young people in community service. Visit one or more successful youth service projects to demonstrate appreciation for the special talents of young people. Create an event -breakfast, lunch, dinner or other -to recognize young people who are special achievers in community service. Assemble a public photo display highlighting successful youth service projects. Issue a proclamation supporting "National Youth Service Day." In 1990 many new organizations have formed a National Organizing Committee to assist. Prudential-Bache Securities Inc. has agreed to play a major grass roots leadership role across the country. Through their 325 branch offices, they will offer on-site professional support to help organize successful events.
